Volunteer Program
Irving Police Department's Volunteer Program not only enhances public safety, but also fosters a deeper connection between law enforcement and the community.
The Irving Police Department’s Volunteer Program, established in 1992, serves as a vital link between residents and the department. It offers community members an opportunity to support local law enforcement while gaining valuable insight into the community’s needs and resources, and enhancing their own career skills through practical, on-the-job training.
Opportunities
Volunteers serve in various divisions within the department, contributing with dedication and enthusiasm. On average, about 35 volunteers contribute approximately 650 service hours each month. The program provides a wide range of opportunities with flexible scheduling options—daytime and evening shifts are available—to accommodate volunteers’ needs. The Community Services Division administers the program and maintains an up-to-date list of volunteer positions.
Qualifications
Opportunities are open to anyone 21 years of age or older, including retirees, students, professionals and homemakers. Prospective volunteers must complete an application and screening process, attend the Citizen's Police Academy, and sign a confidentiality agreement. The Citizen's Police Academy offers a comprehensive overview of the department’s operations, meeting once a week for three hours over an 11-week period, plus an additional eight-hour session on Saturday. Two courses are offered annually, one in the spring and one in the fall.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Volunteers are expected to commit a minimum of eight hours per month. In the event of scheduling conflicts or inability to meet commitments, volunteers are encouraged to contact a supervisor or program coordinator as soon as possible. Volunteers are expected to view their role as a serious commitment to public service and to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
Staff Responsibilities
The department’s staff is committed to ensuring that volunteering at the Irving Police Department is both rewarding and enjoyable. Volunteers are matched with assignments that suit their interests and skills, and receive appropriate training and supervision. Supervisors keep detailed records of volunteer hours and duties, and work with coordinators to accommodate any requests for assignment changes.
