Traffic Operations

The Traffic Operations Division operates and maintains the city's transportation network through an Advanced Traffic Management System.

The traffic operations system includes a wireless communication network that improves traffic safety and synchronizes traffic flow.

With this system, city staff monitor roadway issues remotely at the operations center as traffic signals communicate with one another, allowing traffic signals to be adjusted to current traffic flow.

Traffic signal technicians monitor all parts of the system remotely. Additionally, automatic notification of signal malfunctions such as power outages and flashing operations alert on-call personnel outside of normal working hours.

Sign Shop
Traffic Count

Irving’s sign shop is the birthplace of most official street signs within city limits, from speed limit and stop signs to logos and decals on official city vehicles.

On average, about 3,500 street signs originate from the sign shop each year. The majority of the signs fabricated are replacement signs that need to be updated to accommodate federal and state guidelines.

Staff in the sign shop also assists in conducting the city’s annual traffic count.
