Take Me Home
Take me home – safe, compassionate support to get you home.
Assisting those with Special Needs Home
The Take Me Home program was initially developed by the Pensacola Police Department in Florida to support individuals with disabilities during emergencies. This assistance is crucial for individuals who may have difficulty speaking, identifying themselves, or may become easily disoriented—situations that can lead to misinterpretations by first responders.
The City of Irving offers this program free of charge to residents who have challenges communicating. It is specifically designed for individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and other developmental or cognitive disabilities. The program also extends support to senior citizens experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s, ensuring that those who need extra help getting home receive the assistance they require.
How Do I Enroll a Family Member?
The program is managed through a secure database maintained by the Irving Police Department and is accessible only to public safety personnel. Families interested in the program can complete an online registration form once they are informed about the service. For those who prefer not to use the online form, assistance is available through the Community Services Division at (972) 721-2544, where a crime prevention officer will help complete the registration.
After the registration process begins, a crime prevention officer will contact the family to finalize the registration and arrange a time to capture a current photograph of the person being registered. This photograph, taken by an Irving Police Department officer, can be obtained either at the Irving Criminal Justice Center located at 305 N. O’Connor Road or at the family’s residence upon request.
How Does the Program Work?
- When an officer locates your loved one, the officer will search the Irving PD Take Me Home database.
- Once the officer matches that loved one to the database’s entry, contact will be made with the listed contact person.
- The officer will then make arrangements to get the loved one back home.
