Full Access Cards | Adult Irving Residents
Irving residents ages 18 or older.
HOW TO OBTAIN A FULL-ACCESS CARD
- Must be at least 18 years of age and living in Irving.
- Bring ID with current address (if the ID is expired or shows an old address bring a document from the following list of acceptable forms of identification).
- Getting a library card is free for Irving residents!
PREREGISTER FOR A FULL-ACCESS CARD
Get a jump on obtaining a new library card by preregistering online. A benefit to preregistering is placing up to two items on hold, which can be picked up along with the new card if materials are ready. After preregistering online, the card applicant has 30 days to complete the registration by submitting identification. Applicants may visit any Irving Library location with their ID with their current address (see the list of acceptable forms of identification if the card applicant does not have an ID with their current address) or email circulation@irvingtx.gov with the following information:
- Temporary card number from the preregistration form (will begin with “SELFREG”)
- Item from List A on the list of acceptable forms of identification
- Item from List B on the list of acceptable forms of identification
The library cannot guarantee the security of personal information emailed to the library.

Cards for Purchase
Individuals who are not residents of the City of Irving may purchase:
- Full Access Card with borrowing, database access and computer use privileges (requires identification) - $40 per year
- Computer Access Card for computer use only (up to two sessions per day)
- $20 for one year
- $5 for one month
The nonresident fee is a nonrefundable fee and must be paid before an expired card can be renewed.
Preregister for a NonResident Card

The security of personal information emailed to the library cannot be guaranteed.
Determining Residency
Residency is determined by the address ID (PDF) given at the time of registering for a new card or renewing a card. The individual must reside in the City of Irving in order to be exempt from the nonresident card fees.
Renewing a NonResident Card
Nonresidents may renew an expired library card by visiting an Irving Library and presenting a valid photo ID and a separate and current address ID for verification. The annual nonresident card fee must be paid at that time. The library card must also be in good standing (no overdue fines or fees on the card). Nonresidents may also renew a card by emailing the same information plus a photo of the back of the library card to circulation@cityofirving.org. The security of personal information emailed to the library cannot be guaranteed.

The Texshare Card
Nonresidents who wish to check out a limited number of items from an Irving Public Library may present a valid TexShare card from their home library. To obtain the free Irving Library’s TexShare Visitor card, users can visit the Irving library and present a current and valid TexShare Card from their home library, their valid photo ID, a separate proof of address, and their home library card. The TexShare Visitor card allows a 5-item checkout limit. An expired TexShare Visitor card that has been maintained in good standing (no lost items or charges) may be renewed by presenting the same items. TexShare cards may also be obtained and renewed through email. Please see the TexShare Card section for more details on the process.
TEACHER CARD
Nonresident educators and staff with Irving ISD may receive a free Irving Public Library Card for personal use. Those wishing to get this card must present a current Irving ISD staff badge and a photo ID with current address (see the list of acceptable forms of identification if ID or address listed on ID are not current). The Teacher card is good for one year and has a 50-item checkout limit. This card also allows the use of IPL online databases, ebooks, digital downloads and public computers. About the Card
A computer access card entitles cardholders to use the public computers at any Irving Public Library location. Each customer may have up to two sessions a day; sessions can be up to 90 minutes in length. Check out the Computer and Internet Policy (PDF) for more information. NOTE: All Irving libraries offer free public Wi-Fi and access to wireless printing.
Card Restrictions
Users must have a card and know their PIN to sign onto a library computer. Staff cannot supply the card number or enter a card number for an account holder. PINs can be reset if forgotten. Computer Access Cards do not include checkout privileges or remote use of electronic resources, including online databases, streaming video and downloadable media.
Fees
- Non-residents may either pay $5 for one month’s access or $20 for a year’s access to library computers.
- The first Computer Use Only Card is free for residents.
Renewing a Computer Access Card
An expired Computer Use Only card can be renewed by visiting the library and presenting a valid photo ID and a separate current proof of address ID for verification. Renewals can also be done over our online chat service. Replacements must be obtained at a library location. Non-residents and those who cannot provide a current address ID will need to pay the applicable fee to renew the card. Fees will be assessed to the customer's library card account to be paid online.

HOW TO OBTAIN A YOUTH CARD
- Children under the age of 18 may obtain a card upon application by a parent or legal guardian.
- The parent or legal guardian must have a card in good standing with no overdue items or outstanding bills, or the parent or legal guardian must obtain a card.
The parent or legal guardian and child must visit a library together to obtain a youth card.
The parent or legal guardian must show a government-issued photo ID to register the child for a Youth card.
Legal guardians are asked to show proof of guardianship.
ABOUT YOUTH CARDS
Privileges granted by the Youth card are identical to those of a Full Access adult card.
Parents and guardians wanting guidance on choosing which library materials are appropriate for their children may want to consult the Parents’ Guide to Library Collections for Youth. All notices will be delivered to the email address or telephone number listed by the parent or legal guardian on the youth card application. The parent or legal guardian is responsible for all items checked out on the child’s card.
When the youth card is first issued, it will have a limit of up to 10 items out at one time and will expire in 90 days. At that time, if there are no overdue items and no bills on the account for the previous 90 days, the card will be upgraded to a full privilege card that allows checking out of as many as 50 items at one time.
YOUTH CARD RENEWALS
For renewing a child’s card in person, the child or the library card must be present. The parent or guardian must show their photo ID with the correct address, or alternate address ID (see list of ID options here). Youth cards are not eligible for online renewals.
OTHER CARD OPTIONS FOR MINORS
A parent or legal guardian may also register a child for a Computer Use Only card by filling out the same application form. A fee will apply for non-residents. A child who attends a middle school or high school in Irving can also use their student ID to register for an Irving Student Card.

HOW TO OBTAIN A STUDENT CARD
Middle and high school students who attend a school within the Irving city limits may register online for a student card or visit a library in person to register.
To register for a Student card online:
- Complete the online preregistration form
- Email the assigned SELFREG#
and a scanned copy or photo of the current year student photo ID to Circulation@irvingtx.gov. Please write REGISTER IPL STUDENT CARD in the email subject line. - Students without school-issued photo IDs: If the school does not issue photo IDs to students, include any kind of photo ID for either the student or a parent/guardian, PLUS an official document from the school with the student’s name, such as a report card, school schedule, or enrollment form.
- A parent ID is not required to obtain a Student Card.
Please allow 24 to 48 hours for the card registration to be processed and approved. An email reply will be sent to confirm that the card is registered with the Student Card number.
We cannot guarantee the security of personal information emailed to the library.

- The student card does not allow checkouts of eBooks or physical items, including books, DVDs, and CDs.

Student Card Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What grade does my child need to be in in order to be eligible to get an Irving Student card?
A: Students must be in a 6th through 12th grade school located in Irving.
Q: My school doesn’t issue photo IDs. Can I still get a Student card?
A: Yes, but those without a photo ID from their school will need to bring two documents: Any kind of photo ID for either the student or a parent/guardian, PLUS an official document from the school with the student’s name, such as a report card, school schedule, or enrollment form. Photo IDs for the student can include a Parks and Rec ID, passport, or other photo ID.
Q: I don’t have a permanent address because I’m homeless. Can I still get a card?
A: Yes, students are not required have a home address to obtain a student card.
Q: I go to school in Irving, but I live in another city. Can I still get a card?
A: Yes, students do not need live in Irving to get a Student card. Show staff a current ID from a school located in Irving.
Q: I sometimes lose things. Do you charge a replacement fee if I lose my card?
A: No. Students get one free replacement per year.
Q: I have an old Youth card, but it’s expired. Can I get a student card?
A: Yes. If the Student cardholder ever wishes to renew their Youth card to check out
physical and digital books, a parent or guardian will need to be present in order to renew.
Q: My Student Card expired, how can I renew it or get a new one?
A: To renew the Irving Student card, please visit the library and show a current school ID showing the current school year and school located in Irving. Student cards may also be renewed through LibChat or by emailing circulation@irvingtx.gov.
Q: I owe money on an old card. Can I get a Student card?
A: Yes, but all charges on the account will need to be paid in order to upgrade a Student card to a Youth or Full Access card in order to check out books.
Q: I already have a Youth card, do I need to get a Student card too?
A: No, with a Youth card you already have full access to all library services.
Q: What if I want to upgrade my Student card to either a Youth or Full Access card?
A: A Student cardholder can upgrade a Student card to a Youth or Full Access card in order to check out books, DVDs, music CDs, and digital materials. Youth cards require a parent/guardian to come into an Irving Library to show their photo ID with correct address or documents from the following list of acceptable forms of identification. Youth cards require a parent/guardian to have their own card, so those living outside of Irving, the parent/guardian will need to show their Photo ID with correct address or documents from the following list of acceptable forms of identification and pay an annual $40 non-resident fee for each card.
Once an Irving student turns 18 years old or older they can upgrade to a Full Access card. Please show a photo ID with correct address or documents from the following list of acceptable forms of identification. Those living outside of Irving, will also need to pay a $40 non-resident fee each year for the card.

About College Cards
Students of colleges, universities, trade schools and other higher education institutions in Irving who are 18 years of age or older can obtain a free Irving College library card that will allow them to:
- Borrow eBooks, eMedia and other digital materials through the library’s digital downloads services
- Access research databases and e-learning resources
- Use computers at the library
- Check out study rooms
- Use the library’s Make It Yourself Zones
The College Card does not allow patrons to borrow physical materials from the library. Patrons who would like to be able to take home books, DVDs, and other items can sign up for a free Full Access Card if they live in Irving or sign up for a Nonresident Card for a $40 annual fee if they live outside of Irving.
HOW TO OBTAIN A COLLEGE CARD
Students attending an Irving higher education institution may register for a College card by providing their current student photo ID. Students whose school IDs do not list a birth date will need to provide a government-issued photo ID with birth date listed. Students who do not have a current school ID with their photo on it can instead provide a government-issued photo ID along with proof of current enrollment in an Irving college, university, or trade school. Proof of current enrollment could come from documents such as a course schedule, bill from the bursar’s office, or letter of registration from the registrar’s office."
RENEWING A COLLEGE CARD
College cards are valid for one year from the date they are issued. After one year, the patron must again show proof of identification and current student status in order to renew the card.

About the card
Non-resident educators and staff with Irving ISD may receive a free personal use Irving Public Library Card. Those wishing to get this card must show a current Irving ISD staff badge and a photo ID with current address. This new card is valid for 1 year and has a 50-item checkout limit.
This card also allows the use of IPL online databases, ebooks, digital downloads and public computers. There is no non-resident fee for this card. Visit any Irving Public Library or IPL outreach event to get your card or register a card online.

ABOUT THE CARD
Those unable to visit the library in person can register for a library card via email, fax, or postal mail and have a library card mailed to their home. Once the registrant receives their card, they can allow someone else to pick up and return library materials on their behalf and/or use the library’s many digital services.
HOW TO OBTAIN A HOMEBOUND CARD

Email a scan or photo of your photo ID and a scan or photo of a document with the applicant's name and current address on it to circulation@irvingtx.gov. View a list of acceptable forms of identification and address documents. If possible, please complete the online preregistration form as well.

Those with no photo ID or proof of address:
Staff understand that not everyone has the common forms of ID and address documentation used by the library. Staff are happy to work with those individuals to accept alternative documents, including a letter on institution letterhead from an assisted living facility stating the applicant is a resident, if that applies. Please send an email at circulation@irvingtx.gov or call 972-721-2628 and ask to speak to a member of the Circulation staff to discuss options.
CARD PRIVILEGES
A card issued this way has all the same privileges as a Full Access library card.
Any person who is carrying the library card with them will be able to use the card the same way the account holder would. Family members, caregivers or friends can pick up holds or check out library materials on someone else's behalf.
Please be aware that the account holder will be financially responsible for any materials checked out on the card, so choose the people who have access to the card carefully. If someone unauthorized gains access to the card or card number, please contact staff at circulation@irvingtx.gov or 972-721-2530 to request that for the account to be blocked until a new library card number can be issued.
RENEWING A HOMEBOUND LIBRARY CARD
Library cards are valid for two years. After that, please complete the process for obtaining a card again. In the message to the library, please indicate that is in an already established account in need of a renewal.

About the Card
Corporations and businesses in the City of Irving are eligible to apply for a Corporate Card from the Irving Public Library. This enables representatives from the company or business to borrow library materials from the Irving Public Library on behalf of the company.
How to Obtain a Corporate Card
To apply for a Corporate Card a written request must be made on company letterhead and submitted (email preferred) to the Irving Public Library along with the completed application: Corporate Card Application (PDF) or the Corporate Card Application (.docx).

Renewing a Corporate Card
Each authorized Corporate card issued is renewable annually. The company or business will send an updated authorization request and an updated application with any changes. The updated authorization list must be submitted on company letterhead.
