Irving Police Chief Miller

Chief of Police

The Irving Police Department swore in its 11th police chief, Chief Derick Miller, on Tuesday, May 31, 2022. 

A native of Benbrook, Chief Miller joined the Carrollton Police Department in 1992 as a reserve officer. Since then, he worked his way up through each rank and was appointed police chief of the Carrollton Police Department in 2017. 


Chief Miller's main interests are contemporary policing issues, professional policing approaches, and community engagement. Chief Miller is committed and dedicated to building on Irving's success with community engagement and a strong focus on an internal presence, connection, and good communication with department employees at all levels.

Darren

Assistant Chief Darren Steele joined the Irving Police Department in February 1999 after serving five years with the Carrollton Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant in 2004, to lieutenant in 2007, to captain in 2012 and was selected as an assistant chief in March of 2017.


He has served in the Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Community Services, Personnel and Internal Affairs Divisions.


Steele holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science from Texas Tech University and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Oklahoma. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum’s 52nd Session of the Senior Management Institute for Police and the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration’s 51st School of Executive Leadership.

Thomas

Assistant Chief Thomas Hover began his career with the Irving Police Department on December 15, 2003, as a police officer. After promoting through the chain of command, he was sworn in as Assistant Chief on April 28, 2023. 


Over his 20-year tenure, he has served in Patrol, Special Operations, Detention & Evidence, Community Services, and the DWI Unit. 


Chief Hover earned his Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Texas State University and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Tarleton State University. He is a graduate of the 54th School of Executive Leadership graduate from The Center for American and International Law, the 91st School of Leadership Command College from the Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas, and the 287th FBI National Academy.

Sam

Assistant Chief Sam Hall began his career with the Irving Police Department in 1991 as a detention officer. He became a police officer in 1997 and graduated as valedictorian of his police academy class. He was promoted to sergeant in 2009, lieutenant in 2011, captain in 2014, and assistant chief in 2019.


He has served in the Patrol, Special Operations, Personnel, Community Services, and Technical Services Divisions.


Hall holds a bachelor’s degree from Thomas Edison State University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy class #269, Police Executive Research Forum’s 72nd Session of the Senior Management Institute for Police, and the Institute for Law Enforcement Administration’s 52nd School of Executive Leadership.
