How to Rehome Your Pet

At Irving Animal Services (IAS) we understand that sometimes pet owners find themselves in a position where they support or may even need to rehome their pet.

If a pet must be rehomed, we as that the pet owners explore all rehoming options before bring a pet to the shelter.

Surrendering a pet to Irving Animal Services should be a last resort. Our staff work tirelessly to find positive outcomes but we cannot always guarantee that an animal will be adopted. Animals may be adopted, transferred to rescue or other shelter partners, or potentially euthanized.

Try Rehoming Your Pet on Your Own

Rehoming sights such as Rehome offers a simple, reliable and free option for pet owners to find a new home for their pet.

How does Rehome work?

  1. Create an online pet profile through Rehome. This profile will be able to be seen by millions of pet adopters
  2. Review applications and the Rehome team will help owners select the best pet adopter matches.
  3. Meet adopters with Rehome's guidance for a safe and pressure-free meeting.
  4. Finalize the adoption with Rehome's adoption contract to protect the transfer of your pet ownership.

If You are an Irving Resident, and You are Unable to Keep Your Pet.

If you absolutely have to owner surrender your pet, as long as you are an Irving Resident, you can make an Owner Surrender Appointment.

Please give the shelter a call at 972-721-2256 to start the process and make the owner surrender appointment.

At time of appointment, you will need to bring your pet and a valid ID. The ID should include your current Irving Address. If it does not, you will need to bring proof of residency (a lease agreement, water bill, etc. with your name and current address).

Please remember, the shelter should be the last resort for your pet as it has the chance to be adopted, transferred to a rescue or shelter partner or even be humanely euthanized.
